KUCHING, March 23: While other communities might mark the fasting month with the well-known bubur lambuk, bubur pedas, or bubur Asyura, Kampung Tabuan Haji Drahman @ Tabuan Foochow takes pride in doing things a little differently.
For the fifth consecutive year, the Foochianz Brotherhood, a local sports and recreation club, upheld its unique tradition of preparing and distributing mushroom soup to the kampung’s residents.
This year’s edition of Cahaya Ramadan, held today, saw a record 500 packets of the beloved soup being distributed to residents and passersby alike.
What made it even more special was the participation of the younger generation, who worked from the early hours of the morning to prepare the hearty dish.

Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii, who attended the event, praised the initiative, describing it as a meaningful activity that fosters youth involvement while embodying the values of Ramadan—not just fasting for oneself, but also serving and helping others, regardless of religion or race.
“In this kampung, there is a road where many Iban families reside, and we want to demonstrate mutual respect while extending assistance to those in need.
“To me, this is a core value we uphold in Sarawak—no matter our religion or ethnicity, we come together, celebrate together, and support those around us,” he stated.

The Foochianz Brotherhood, consisting of 50 members, had previously funded the initiative entirely on their own. However, this year marked a milestone as Dr Yii provided full sponsorship for the first time.
“We are extremely grateful. This is a small but meaningful tradition for the youth in Kampung Tabuan Foochow, and having the support of Dr Kelvin Yii means a lot to us,” said Mahudin Hood, chairman of the Foochianz Brotherhood. – DayakDaily
