KUCHING, March 7: A 27-year-old man, Nursyaiful Rosli, played a crucial role in helping during today’s fire at Kampung Tabuan Haji Drahman @ Tabuan Foochow, which affected a house behind his own.
Syaiful, who lived next door to the affected house, said he and his family had smelled smoke for some time but were initially unsure of its source.
It was not until his mother, Dayang Suria Awang Siee, 52, was informed by other neighbours about the fire that they realized the house behind theirs was engulfed in flames.
“Upon learning of the fire, I, together with another neighbour, immediately rushed to the scene and saw flames coming from the bedroom of the burning house.
“Acting quickly, we broke into the house and started moving out whatever we could reach to prevent further losses,” he told DayakDaily.
In addition to salvaging valuables, Syaiful and other neighbors also worked together to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby houses while waiting for the firefighters to arrive.
While he managed to help salvage some belongings, his own house did not escape unscathed.
The fire caused severe damage to the outdoor air conditioner compressor outside his house, while the intense heat shattered the windows of their kitchen.
His family also had to act swiftly to protect themselves. Dayang Suria recounted, “I only managed to grab my young grandchild and my handbag before escaping.”
Firefighters arrived shortly after and managed to bring the fire under control. Investigations into the cause of the blaze are currently underway. – DayakDaily
