KUCHING, Apr 6: Sarawak is seeking to expand Bumiputera participation in high-growth industries such as hydrogen and semiconductors as part of efforts to strengthen long-term economic resilience.
In a recent statement, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan highlighted the priority during the Steering Committee meeting of the Majlis Ekonomi Bumiputera (MEB) held in Putrajaya today.
The meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Patinggi Ahmad Zahid Hamidi focused on strategies to reinforce Bumiputera economic participation, so the community remains competitive amid evolving global economic conditions.
“Bumiputera participation in high-growth high-value (HGHV) sectors must be expanded in line with the changing economic landscape and Sarawak’s development ambitions.
“Among the sectors identified were the hydrogen industry, petrochemicals, advanced manufacturing, aerospace and semiconductors, which are seen as potential drivers of new economic growth and high-skilled employment opportunities,” he said.
He noted that strengthening Bumiputera involvement in these sectors would help ensure broader economic participation while supporting Sarawak’s industrial development.
In addition to technology-driven industries, Awang Tengah emphasised the importance of strengthening food security through the development of commercial agriculture.
He said expanding commercial agricultural activities could help stabilise food supply while increasing income for rural communities.
According to him, inclusive and sustainable development remains essential to ensure the economic benefits reach Bumiputera communities across Sarawak.
The initiatives discussed at the meeting are aligned with Sarawak’s Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030, which aims to transform the State into a developed and high-income economy by 2030. — DayakDaily
