KUCHING, Aug 8: Sarawak is pushing for the redelineation process of the proposed 17 new State Legislative Assembly (DUS) seats to move to the next stage, with the matter having been raised in the Federal Cabinet.
According to a report by TVS, Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said she and Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi raised the matter at a Cabinet meeting two weeks ago. Nancy and Nanta are also the MPs for Santubong and Kapit, respectively.
She said the move was aimed at ensuring the process could proceed to Parliament for tabling and approval after going through the necessary procedures.
“At the Cabinet meeting two weeks ago, Datuk Seri Alexander and I raised this matter because we know the process has been carried out by the Election Commission (EC), and Sarawak has also approved it at the State level.
“As there has been no further progress regarding the tabling and process at the Federal level, we raised it in Cabinet so that the matter could be brought to Parliament for tabling,” she said to the media after officiating the Quick Win Pastry Culinary Skills Course under the 13th Malaysia Plan at Santubong Community College here today.
Nancy said the additional constituencies would allow more elected representatives to serve the people and accelerate development in each area, particularly given Sarawak’s vast size.
“Sarawak is such a large area, almost the size of Peninsular Malaysia. With what we have now, it is not easy for us to develop the State,” she said.
On July 7, 2026, DUS had passed a Bill to increase the number of seats from the current 82 to 99. — DayakDaily
