S’wak pursues strategic partnership with Int’l Hydropower Assoc, Global Renewables Alliance in London meeting

KUCHING, May 2: The Sarawak government held a meeting with the International Hydropower Association (IHA) and the Global Renewables Alliance (GRA) with the aim of forming a strategic partnership which will strengthen the State’s position as a global leader in the transition to renewable energy.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) report, this followed a meeting between Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and the State government delegation with IHA and GRA at a hotel in London on Thursday (May 1).

Other matters discussed included exploring new opportunities in the renewable energy sector beyond hydropower, including solar energy, hydrogen, and energy storage.

The meeting also discussed potential collaboration in producing green hydrogen using renewable energy sources in Sarawak to build a more resilient and sustainable energy future.

Meanwhile, IHA said they are developing an optimal energy generation mix model, taking into account the integration of renewable energy sources, particularly solar.

This collaboration involves the development of an energy model with Malaysia and Indonesia to study energy pricing structures and the absorption rate of renewable energy.
