KUCHING, July 19: Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, led a delegation on a strategic mission to the Hainan Province in China to strengthen bilateral ties and explore international collaboration opportunities across key sectors.
According to a press release, the visit began in Wenchang, where the delegation met with officials from the China National Space Administration and representatives from the Wenchang International Aerospace City.
Discussions focused on advancing cooperation in the field of space and satellite technologies, with key areas for potential collaboration including satellite development and applications, talent development in space engineering, establishing ground stations, and joint research initiatives.
The delegation also visited the Wenchang Satellite Launch Centre to gain firsthand insights into China’s integrated space infrastructure and was briefed on the long-term space development roadmap of the Wenchang International Aerospace City.
In Haikou, the delegation met with senior leaders and department heads of the Hainan Provincial Government, led by Jiang Xiongbiao, deputy director-general of the Foreign Affairs Office of Hainan Province.
The dialogue focused on prospective partnerships in the digital economy, particularly in areas such as data centre infrastructure, international fibre optic connectivity, and space-related initiatives.
Both parties reaffirmed the importance of institutional cooperation and technical exchange in fostering sustainable and innovative development.
“These engagements mark a significant milestone in Sarawak’s ongoing efforts to build international partnerships that support digital transformation, infrastructure development, and participation in the global space economy,” said the press release.
The Sarawak delegation included the Datuk Liwan Lagang, Sarawak Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (Telecommunication); Dato Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar, Sarawak Financial Secretary; Datu Jafri Lias, permanent secretary to the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak; Dato Dr Anderson Tiong Ing Heng, general manager of the Sarawak Multimedia Authority; and senior officers from the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak, Sarawak Civil Service Digitalisation Unit, Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd, Sarawak AI Centre, and Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation. — DayakDaily
