SIBU, Nov 22: Sarawak has proposed holding various sporting events in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games 2027 in all divisions in the State, similar to what was done with the 21st Malaysia Games 2024 (Sukma 2024).
Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said that Sarawak, which is set to co-host the SEA Games 2027, aims to adopt a similar approach as Sukma 2024, which saw various sporting events held in nine divisions across the State.
“I cannot confirm whether events will take place in Sibu, Miri, or other areas in Sarawak, though there have been calls for the SEA Games to be decentralised across divisions.
“Nonetheless, it would be a significant achievement if Sarawak could co-host the 2027 SEA Games and spread out the events as we did during Sukma,” he said at the Sukma Sarawak Central Zone Appreciation Night last night (Nov 21).
He also added that the decision rests with the main committee in Kuala Lumpur.
“We’ll have to wait and see, but I’m hopeful our request will be considered favourably,” he said.
Deputy State Secretary (Operations) and Sukma 2024 chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Hii Chang Kee; Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Sarawak Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee; Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Sarawak Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee; and Deputy Minister for Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Sarawak Datuk Mohamad Razi Sitam were present during the event. — DayakDaily
