KUCHING, Aug 9: Sarawak may need to develop expertise in forensic psychology as increasingly complex lifestyles and rising stress create new social challenges, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said the changing nature of society meant Sarawak needed to anticipate new challenges and ensure its human capital was prepared for disciplines such as forensic psychology, which could become increasingly relevant.
“For young people, and sometimes even older people, our lifestyles are becoming more complicated. There will be a lot of stress, and stress will become a disease,” he said when officiating the 18th Triennial General Assembly of SABERKAS Sarawak here today.
Abang Johari said such challenges were already being seen in developed countries, where rising social and lifestyle pressures had created greater demand for specialised expertise.
He said forensic psychology was among the disciplines Sarawak should consider developing as part of its efforts to prepare for the changing needs of society.
The Premier said Sarawak’s human capital development should also take into account emerging social challenges that could arise as the State develops.
He stressed that young Sarawakians needed to be prepared to acquire new knowledge and enter emerging fields rather than simply follow established career paths.
“The future is in your hands and you have to add value to what we have built,” he said.
He said Sarawak’s ability to respond to emerging social challenges would depend on having a well-trained generation capable of adapting to change and developing expertise in areas such as forensic psychology that may not yet be widely established in the State. — DayakDaily
