KUCHING, June 7: The Sarawak government is interested in collaborating with the University of British Columbia (UBC) to provide certified mining-related courses and training programmes to Sarawakians through Sarawak-owned higher learning institutions.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan highlighted this initiative during a Sarawak government delegation visit to the Bradshaw Research Institute for Minerals and Mining (BRIMM) at UBC in Vancouver, Canada, on Thursday (June 6).
In a media release today, he also emphasised the importance of learning from Vancouver’s leading mining industry, citing the success as a benchmark for empowering the mining sector in Sarawak.
The mining sector is one of the six key economic sectors under the Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
During the visit, the delegation received a briefing on Canada’s mining industry. Discussions with BRIMM representatives covered key aspects of a responsible mining industry, including training, talent development, and institutional framework.
The visit underscores Sarawak’s commitment to develop the mining sector further sustainably and responsibly, aiming to accelerate socio-economic developments in line with PCDS 2030.
Among those in the delegation were Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development Sarawak Datuk Len Talif Salleh and Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63, and State-Federal Relations), Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Syed Aman Ghazali.
Other members of the delegation are State Attorney-General Datu Saferi Ali, State Financial Secretary Dato Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar, Economic Planning Unit director Datu Lester Matthew, and Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development permanent secretary Datu Abdullah Julaihi. — DayakDaily
