KUCHING, April 9: Renovation works on the Kuching Civic Centre will begin soon, following reports that several roof tiles had dislodged and fallen into the compound of a nearby house, raising safety concerns over the building’s deteriorating condition.

According to a TVS news report, Deputy Minister of Sarawak Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, acknowledged that the centre, once a prominent venue for events in Kuching, is now in need of urgent upgrades. However, he noted that the progress of the renovation was affected by weather conditions.

“I have instructed my team to review the roof structure, and since the Covid-19 pandemic, we have had various issues involving the buildings here that have not been maintained, compounded by the unpredictable weather conditions.

“We will upgrade this place (the Civic Centre) because its location in the city centre allows it to be used by the public. Unfortunately, that incident occurred, and we will send a technical team from Public Works Department (JKR) to assess the safety level of the building,” he was quoted as saying during a press conference after the Asia Oceania Qualifiers 2025 – ITF World Junior Tennis (Boys Under 14) event at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) centre.

It was reported that the replacement of the civic centre’s polycarbonate roof with a metal one is scheduled to begin in July, with an estimated cost ranging from RM200,000 to RM300,000. – DayakDaily
