KUCHING, Feb 23: Sarawak is intensifying its efforts to position itself as one of the leading destinations in Malaysia ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VMY2026) by leveraging strong industry partnerships, improved connectivity, and diverse tourism products to attract both domestic and international travellers.
According to a press release by the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), the ‘Sarawak Gateway to Borneo Business Networking Session’ held from Fen 17-21 in Penang, Kuala Lumpur, and Johor brought together key stakeholders to align strategies, expand market outreach, and reinforce industry collaboration in preparation for an anticipated surge in visitor arrivals.
The networking session is a pivotal step in aligning efforts across airlines, travel operators, hoteliers, and tourism stakeholders to create a seamless and world-class visitor experience.
The synergy between government bodies, private sector players, and industry partners is essential in ensuring Sarawak is well-positioned to attract a greater share of VMY2026 visitors.
Commenting on Sarawak’s achievement of welcoming 4.8 million tourists in 2024, STB chief executive officer (CEO) Sharzede Datu Salleh Askor said that the milestone is about delivering high-quality and immersive experiences that reflect Sarawak’s identity as a must-visit destination.
“Sarawak’s strength lies in its authentic eco-tourism, cultural heritage, and diverse travel experiences that appeal to both domestic and international visitors.
“Whether it’s Malaysians rediscovering the wonders of their own country or global travellers seeking something beyond the ordinary, Sarawak offers an experience that is rich, immersive, and sustainable,” said Sharzede.

With the Gunung Mulu National Park and Niah National Park—as twin Unesco World Heritage Sites—Sarawak provides opportunities for adventure seekers, nature lovers, and history enthusiasts, according to the press release.
Complementing that are the Borneo Cultures Museum, Sarawak Cultural Village, and Bung Bratak Heritage Centre which showcase the State’s deep-rooted traditions, indigenous cultures, and vibrant arts, it added.
In addition, Sarawak is set on establishing itself as a family- and halal-friendly destination, as families can enjoy interactive museum exhibits, scenic river cruises, and easy rainforest treks. At the same time, food lovers can explore Sarawak’s halal-certified gastronomy.
Recognising that connectivity is vital to tourism growth, Sarawak has also enhanced its travel accessibility and infrastructure through the acquisition of MASwings and the launch of AirBorneo, which complements existing airline networks.
Sarawak is also pioneering sustainable urban mobility, having introduced Malaysia’s first hydrogen-powered buses in Kuching, providing eco-friendly transport. The State’s hospitality sector is also expanding, with new international hotel brands offering a range of accommodations.

At the same time, the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) is undergoing expansion to accommodate up to 10,000 delegates, further positioning Sarawak as a preferred destination for international business events, conferences, and exhibitions.
At the same time, the Strategic Partnership Collaboration Fund (SPCF) further supports these efforts, offering financial assistance for tourism marketing, promotional activities, and collaborative industry events.
“The opportunities ahead are vast, and we invite stakeholders, airlines, hoteliers, and tourism operators to collaborate with us in shaping Sarawak’s tourism landscape for VMY2026 and beyond.
“Sarawak is ready to welcome the world, offering a journey that seamlessly blends heritage, adventure, and discovery,” said Sharzede. — DayakDaily
