MIRI, Oct 25: The damaged old trail at the Bukit Lima Nature Reserve has been closed to the public for several months due to safety concerns and is awaiting upgrade works, expected to begin in early 2027.
The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) said this in a statement responding to a news article by an English daily regarding the condition of the Bukit Lima trail.
“SFC wishes to clarify that the damaged trail highlighted in the report forms part of the old trail network, which has been closed to the public for several months.
“Closure notices have been installed to inform visitors that the trail is under maintenance, and entry is prohibited for safety reasons,” it said.
It said that the RM38 million allocation under Projek Rakyat for Phase 2 of the Bukit Lima Nature Reserve development project approved by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will be utilised to construct and upgrade walking trails, including replacing the damaged trail highlighted in the report.
It also highlighted that Phase 1 of the Bukit Lima Nature Reserve development project has been completed, delivering improved recreational facilities, including a new 600-metre and an improved 2-kilometre walking route connecting the southern and northern entrances and a One Stop Centre equipped with visitor amenities, which were officially opened to the public in July this year.
“In the meantime, SFC has instructed the park management to strengthen safety measures to prevent unauthorised access to the closed trail.
“SFC welcomes constructive public feedback and wishes to reassure visitors that improvements to Bukit Lima Nature Reserve are being implemented progressively. Visitor safety, recreational enjoyment and conservation of the reserve’s unique peat swamp ecosystem remain our priorities,” it said.
It also reminded visitors to observe closure notices and use only designated trails that remain open to the public. — DayakDaily
