KUCHING, Nov 16: The Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak (MEESty), led by Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, has held discussions with the Global Renewable Alliance (GRA) and the International Hydropower Association (IHA) on potential project collaborations to further expand Sarawak’s renewable energy mix by tapping into the State’s abundant natural resources.
According to a media release, Dr Hazland stated that the collaboration can be forged and initiated from the signing of the power grid agreement during the ASEAN Summit 2025 held in Kuala Lumpur.
The meeting, held in Brazil at the Global Renewable Hub Pavilion during COP30, saw GRA, represented by its regional lead for Asia Pacific, Rex Amancio, and IHA, represented by its chief executive officer (CEO) Eddie Rich and senior energy policy manager and North America regional lead, Debbie Gray, expressing interest in spreading their network and providing their expertise and introducing new technologies that will help Sarawak in its energy and net zero ambitions.
Additionally, the GRA invited Sarawak to participate in the World Hydropower Congress in April 2027 in Australia.
“The continued collaboration between Sarawak, GRA, and IHA will further strengthen the State in meeting its energy generation, renewable energy capacity mix, export and investment targets, as well as enhancing green technology usage in the field of energy, realising the vision of becoming the Battery of Asean,” said the media release. — DayakDaily
