S’wak explores world’s largest waste-to-energy plant, advanced hydro storage in China to boost green energy push

KUCHING, July 17: Sarawak is advancing its green energy ambitions by exploring integrated waste-to-energy systems and advanced pumped hydro energy storage technologies during an official visit to Guangzhou and Shenzhen, China, led by Utility and Telecommunication Minister Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi.

In the ministry’s press release, the visit was described as an effort to strengthen collaboration, explore innovative technologies, and gain valuable insights into best practices in utilities, smart grids, clean energy, and advanced pumped hydro storage facilities in Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

“The delegation visited the Guangzhou Fushan Circular Economy Industrial Park, home to the world’s largest incinerator power generation plant, where they were briefed on integrated waste-to-energy systems and the application of new energy sources, smart grid integration, and clean energy conversion processes for sustainable urban utilities and greener electricity generation.

“In Shenzhen, the delegation visited the Shenzhen Pumped Storage Power Station, one of China’s largest and most advanced pumped hydro facilities. The Minister emphasised that such energy storage infrastructure is highly relevant to Sarawak’s evolving power landscape, especially with the growing integration of renewable energy sources,” the press release stated.

As part of efforts to boost bilateral ties, Julaihi also held a meeting with Shenzhen government leaders and department heads, led by Cao Saixian, Director General of the Shenzhen Foreign Affairs Office.

Both sides exchanged views on key utility areas such as water and electricity supply, telecommunications, and ICT, exploring potential collaborations.

“Shenzhen’s advancements in utility infrastructure and digital connectivity are of great interest, particularly in how large-scale technologies are applied to serve urban and rapidly growing regions.”
