KUCHING, June 12: Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) Members of Parliament and assemblymen will donate at least RM51,000 in total to Tabung Harapan Malaysia.

Sarawak DAP has six MPs and each one of them will chip in a minimum of RM5,000, while its seven assemblymen will each donate a minimum RM3,000.

In announcing their contributions at a press conference here today, its state chairman, Chong Chieng Jen, said it was the right thing to do, being elected representatives of the people, to answer the call to strengthen the countryā€™s coffer in view of the over RM1 trillion national debt incurred by the previous Barisan Nasional government.

Chong, who is Stampin MP and Kota Sentosa assemblyman, said it was heartening that many members of the public were willing to contribute to the national coffer, which is a positive change in attitude and a great show of patriotism.

ā€œThe previous government resorted to all sorts of tactics and even acting like gangsters to squeeze money from the people. After the change of government, people saw the proper management of public funds and (were thus) willing to contribute to the national coffer,ā€ he said.

When the Pakatan Harapan-led federal government revealed recently that the country was over RM1 trillion in debt, a number of Malaysians started using social media to crowdfund to help the country pay its debts.

This led the Finance Ministry to set up Tabung Harapan Malaysia, which has collected over RM55 million as of yesterday from Malaysians, including those staying abroad, and the corporate sector. ā€” DayakDaily
