KUCHING, June 22: Sarawak activist Peter John Jaban has called on the State government to increase funding for parade organisers, which would enable more contingents from across Sarawak and Kalimantan to participate, thereby increasing community visibility and raising parade quality and international appeal to boost the State’s tourism sector.

In a press statement, Peter John, founder of Gabungan Orang Asal Sabah Sarawak (GOASS), noted that it would further drive tourism growth, which can have a positive impact on hotel occupancy, local businesses, and cultural entrepreneurship.

It could also lead to increased cultural richness with more involvement from diverse associations and regions, enhanced tourist attraction, more substantial economic impact, and improved soft diplomacy and regional unity.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Sarawak government for the continued support and privilege to organise the State Gawai Dayak Parade annually, a cultural showcase that stands as a symbol of unity, heritage, and vibrant community spirit.

“Thanks to the State government’s commitment, the parade has grown into a significant cultural highlight. It not only celebrates our Dayak traditions but also brings together over 3,000 participants across more than 100 contingents from diverse communities.

“We remain committed to partnering with the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Sarawak Tourism Board, and other State agencies to ensure this annual event not only endures but thrives honouring our richly woven traditions while boosting the State’s tourism economy,” he said.

The GOASS contingent placed first runner-up at the Gawai Niti Daun Parade 2025 at Kuching Waterfront on June 21, 2025.

Meanwhile, Peter John also touched on GOASS’ first runner-up placement in the Gawai Niti Daun Parade 2025, which took place on Saturday (June 21).

“This year’s competition was incredibly fierce and challenging. My contingent walked barefoot as if treading on scorching embers on the burning charcoal-hot road.

“This achievement adds another historic milestone to our journey following our victory as overall champions of Gawai Dayak 2023, where we were awarded RM10,000,” he said.

He also extended his gratitude to all GOASS members, volunteers, and supporters, adding that this year, the contingent conveyed a powerful message on safeguarding ancestral customs, arts, and cultural identity. — DayakDaily
