KUCHING, Oct 23: Eight foreign men aged between 19 and 38 have been arrested following a police raid on a residence along Jalan Datuk Tawi Sli here, believed to have been used as a call centre for online gambling scams.
Kuching District Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the raid was conducted by a team of officers and personnel from the Kuching District Police Headquarters’ Criminal Investigation Department at about 2.47am today.
Police also seized computer equipment, mobile phones and related devices believed to have been used to operate the fraudulent call centre.
“Preliminary investigations found that the syndicate allegedly operated an online gambling scam involving non-existent gambling games, targeting victims in neighbouring countries.
“All eight suspects are believed to have been working full-time in the operation,” he said in a statement today.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property, an offence punishable by imprisonment of between one and 10 years, whipping and a possible fine upon conviction.
Investigations are also being conducted under Section 120(b) of the Penal Code for criminal conspiracy, which carries a penalty of up to six months’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
All eight suspects were brought before the Kuching Magistrate’s Court today, where the court approved a police application to remand them for three days to assist in investigations.
Alexson urged members of the public to come forward with information on criminal activities and cooperate with police in efforts to prevent crime.
