KUCHING, March 21: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Stakan branch chairman Dato Sim Kiang Chiok calls on Sarawakians to actively spread awareness about the State’s rights to counter distorted narratives propagated through mainstream and social media.

In a statement today, Sim highlighted a concerning rise in inaccurate and deceptive claims about Sarawak’s ownership of its oil and gas resources, particularly those made and amplified by a former high-ranking official.

He further called for an end to the misleading narratives spread by certain media regarding Sarawak’s rightful ownership of its oil and gas resources.

“We have long argued that history books have been written in a way that wrongly suggests Sarawak is owned by Malaya. This has led to the spread of incorrect narratives in Malaya, which, if left unchecked, could cause serious tensions between the people of both regions.

“Our Premier (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg), along with past leaders like Tok Nan (the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem), has emphasised the importance of teaching history accurately in schools to prevent future generations from being misled.

“These concerns are now validated, as more and more people in Malaya wrongly claim that Sarawak is demanding too much and acting like masters rather than partners who are simply asking for what is rightfully theirs,” Sim said.

He also pointed out that these distorted narratives have extended beyond mainstream media to social media platforms, with sensationalised videos gaining traction in Malaya. These videos, often filled with false information, would only deepen mistrust and animosity between the people of Sarawak, Sabah, and Malaya.

“We call on Sarawakians to take action by creating their own videos to set the record straight and support GPS in countering these fabricated histories spread by the Malayan media,” he rallied.

SUPP Stakan Branch stressed that Sarawak’s ownership of its resources is undeniable, as evidenced by Petros’ ability in issuing licenses to companies like Petronas, Murphy Oil, and Shell operating within the State.

“We are committed to ensuring that the correct facts are shared with our members and followers.

“We will continue to fight against the false and misleading narratives spread by both the Malayan media and social media about Sarawak’s rights under MA63. We seek nothing more and nothing less than what is rightfully ours,” Sim affirmed. – DayakDaily
