SIBU, Feb 24: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) has set up its Sibu Jaya branch with its organising secretary Datuk Matthew Chen as the protem chairman.

SUPP secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting, who announced the setting up of the branch today, spoke of the importance of extending the party’s presence to Sibu Jaya.

“We are setting up this branch given that Sibu Jaya has a large population. The establishment is also based on the party’s constitution under Article 12.

“I am happy with this establishment because many people came to give support—even our branch (members) from Bintangor came,” he said to reporters after the meeting.

Ting, who is also the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Sarawak, said that the establishment of this new branch is something positive for SUPP in Sibu.

“This is because SUPP’s first branch started in Sibu,” explained the Piasau assemblyman.

Meanwhile, Chen expressed his appreciation to the party for the appointment and pledged that the branch would do their best to serve the Sibu Jaya residents.

According to him, they will hold the first protem committee meeting on March 16.

“We set up this branch from scratch where some members from the SUPP Dudong branch moved to SUPP Sibu Jaya. To establish a new branch, we need at least 250 members, as in the party constitution,” he explained.

At the meeting, Chen also announced the SUPP Sibu Jaya committee members:

  • Deputy chairman: Kong Sing Ping
  • Vice chairman: William Anut, Tang Tung Khing, Collin Tinting Gindien, Joseph Tang Chiod Sui
  • Secretary: Teo Wee Leng
