KUCHING, Oct 5: The Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) is mourning the passing of veteran leader Datuk Song Swee Guan, who served the public in various local, state, and federal capacities throughout a distinguished political career.
In a recent statement, SUPP secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew paid tribute to Song, highlighting his notable appointments as Padungan assemblyman, Bandar Kuching Member of Parliament, Speaker of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly, and the inaugural Mayor of Kuching South.
Song played a pivotal role in the evolution of Kuching’s local government.
Before the municipality attained city status in 1988, he served as a councillor and chairman of the former Kuching Municipal Council.
Following the transition, he became the first Mayor of Kuching South, where he laid the administrative and operational foundations for the newly established city council.
Ting noted that Song’s strong ties to Padungan represented an important chapter in SUPP’s history of public service.
He described Song as a dedicated figure among a generation of leaders who helped guide the growth and transformation of Kuching and Sarawak over several decades.
Extending his condolences to Song’s family, Ting described his passing as a significant loss to the party and the community he dedicated his life to serving.
“Thank you, Datuk Song Swee Guan, for your years of service and commitment. Your legacy and contributions to Kuching and Sarawak will be remembered,” he said. — DayakDaily
