KUCHING, Jan 26: The Year of the Snake looks to be a promising year for Sarawak’s economic growth amid significant geopolitical developments, says Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Stakan chairman Dato Sim Kiang Chiok.
In a statement issued today, he said the global outlook will be influenced by events such as Donald Trump’s return as the president of the United States (US), the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, and the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
“While these events bring a mix of stability and uncertainty, the potential imposition or increase of tariffs on imports by the US, particularly from major economies like China, may slow global economic growth,” he said.
However, he said Sarawak is poised to thrive, driven by several key factors spearheaded by strong government initiatives.
“Under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, the Sarawak government continues to prioritise infrastructure development, renewable energy projects, and digital transformation.
“With the increasing restoration of Sarawak’s autonomous rights, including gas distribution rights, the State is set to secure better revenue streams,” he said.
In addition, he also said Sarawak’s economy is resilient due to its diversification across sectors such as agriculture, energy, manufacturing, and tourism.
“While the palm oil and timber industries are expected to maintain steady demand, the renewable energy sector continues its robust growth trajectory.
“The State’s commitment to sustainability, especially in renewable energy and carbon capture projects, positions Sarawak as a leader in environmentally conscious development.
“This focus will attract local and foreign investors looking for sustainable growth opportunities,” he said.
He also added that as global travel restrictions ease, Sarawak is expected to see a surge in the recovery and growth of its tourism sector.
“Sarawak’s unique cultural heritage, eco-tourism attractions, and events are expected to draw more visitors. The anticipated takeover of MASwings is likely to improve connectivity and affordability, further boosting the tourism industry,” he said.
At the same time, he said, Sarawak’s ongoing push towards digitalisation through the Sarawak Digital Economy Strategy will unlock innovation in sectors such as e-commerce, fintech, and digital infrastructure; creating new business opportunities and enhancing economic growth.
All this, he said, will also contribute to steady growth in Sarawak’s property sector as demands for residential, commercial, and industrial properties increase due to a growing population, mixed-use developments, and green and sustainable real estate.
“The Year of the Snake symbolises transformation, adaptability, and resilience—qualities that embody Sarawak’s approach to overcoming challenges and seizing opportunities.
“Let us look forward to a prosperous year ahead, working together for the continued development of Sarawak and the well-being of its people,” he said. — DayakDaily
