KUCHING, June 29: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Kuching branch chairwoman Datuk Lily Yong has made it clear that individuals with personal interests, those seeking ‘kang tao’ (business opportunities), and opportunists are not welcome in the party.

She urged members to firmly ground themselves with sincerity to serve if they want the branch to move forward.

“There are two immediate actions we must take to transform the Kuching branch. First, we must eradicate unhealthy practices within the party. We will not welcome those with personal interests, seeking ‘kang tao’, opportunists, or those looking to become councillors or community leaders for personal gain.

“If you want to join the party to find opportunities. No. You cannot stop by temporarily,” she said during the branch’s 65th anniversary celebration, which was officiated by party president and Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, at its office in Jalan Sungai Padungan here tonight.

Yong emphasised that the branch seeks only sincere individuals dedicated to working and serving for the betterment of the people in Kuching City and Padungan.

“Secondly, we should focus our energy on serving people and treat this commitment as our guiding principle. There is more we need to do. We also want members to be compassionate, empathetic, understanding, and forgiving towards our members who have made mistakes,” she said.

Acknowledging the challenges the branch has faced, including internal party struggles and electoral defeats since 2016, Yong urged members to continue speaking the truth and offer constructive criticism.

“We want members to speak the truth, as this will enable us to progress further, not through boot-licking, flattery, or misleading actions,” she reminded.

Yong also expressed her gratitude to the members who have shown aspirations, righteousness, capability, and sincerity in navigating the branch through difficult times.

“The thunderstorm will not drench our fighting spirit. Instead, it will only strengthen our unity. I see your commitment, sincerity, and sacrifices throughout the years, and for that, I am thankful,” she added. — DayakDaily
