KUCHING, March 15: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Dudong branch clarifies that it does not seek assistance from Advocates Association of Sarawak (AAS) Sibu branch.
Its chairman Wong Ching Yong said the named lawyers in Dudong legal aid bureau have agreed to help those who are fined RM10,000 for flouting Covid-19 preventive standard operating procedures (SOP) by rendering their pro bono services based on personal basis.
“SUPP Dudong branch never approaches AAS for assistance.
“I have personally approached all the named lawyers directly or indirectly. They have all happily agreed to give legal advice in their personal capacities and on a pro bono (free) basis. All the named lawyers are my family friends,” said Wong in a statement today.
He said the coordinator of SUPP Dudong legal team – Jason Tay is a volunteer helping to collect data and information regarding the RM10,000 compound.
“SUPP Dudong branch warmly welcomes all parties including AAS to assist in the mitigation for those offenders who were compounded RM10,000 for breaching the SOP,” said Wong.
Wong had on March 13 announced the formation of a legal aid bureau to assist those who wish to appeal their RM10,000 fines for violating Covid-19 SOPs.
The lawyers named in the legal aid bureau include George Lim, Wee Wui Kiat, Victor Lau, Boston Ho Teck Howe, Wong Woan Yi and Vivian Lim, some of whom are members of AAS Sibu.
In response, AAS Sibu issued a statement today to clarify that it is a neutral body without any political affiliation.
In the statement, it was pointed out that the AAS members involved as part of SUPP Dudong legal team are acting on their own and in no way linking to AAS Sibu or AAS Sarawak. — DayakDaily
