Sukma XX: Hii Puong Wei wins gold for Sarawak in swimming

KUCHING, Sept 20: Swimmer Hii Puong Wei added another gold medal to Sarawak’s haul when he triumphed in the men’s 200-metre backstroke event with a time of 2:07.07 at the 20th Malaysia Games 2022 (Sukma XX) in Bukit Jalil National Aquatics Centre, Kuala Lumpur today.

According to a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), he beat Brunei swimmer Joel Ling Thai Yu who claimed silver with a time of 2:12.91, and Melaka’s Low Zheng Yong who bagged bronze with 2:13:90.

Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian presented the prizes to the winners. Repok assemblyman Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii was also present.

Hii also won the bronze medal in the men’s 200-metre individual medley.

The swimming events also witnessed Leong Wan Mei claim the silver medal in the women’s 100-metre freestyle, while Kelly Teo won two bronze medals through the women’s 100-metre freestyle and women’s 200-metre individual medley events.

Meanwhile, Justine Jonnes contributed a bronze medal in the men’s 25-metre shooting event which took place at the Subang Shooting Range.

Pahang shooters Azrul Akmal Zulkefli and Muhammad Adib Abu Hassan claimed the gold and silver medals.

Justine contributes a bronze medal through shooting.

Sarawak is currently in sixth place in the medal tally table, with 15 gold, 19 silver and 27 bronze medals so far.

Johor remained at the top with 50 gold medals, while Terengganu was second with 26 gold medals and Federal Territory in third with 22 gold medals. — DayakDaily
