Sukma 2024: Stephanie Ngu wins first gold medal for Sarawak in Wushu

KUCHING, Aug 14: Wushu athlete Stephanie Ngu Chai Ern has earned Sarawak its first gold medal at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2024 today.

The 20-year-old scored 9.603 points in the women’s changquan event which took place at SSC Wushu Hall, Petra Jaya here.

The silver medal went to Johor’s Lee Jia Rong who scored 9.600 points, while Melaka’s Kelly Sy Jie Chin with 9.586 points was awarded the bronze medal.

Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar presented the medals to the winners at the event.

Also present were Wan Junaidi’s wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi; Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (Youth and Sports) Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu; Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (Entrepreneur Development) Dr Ripin Lamat; and Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Operation) Datu Hii Chang Kee who is also the chief executive officer of Sukma 2024.

Ngu was happy to get her first Sukma gold medal and hopes to get one more this Sukma.

Speaking to reporters after the event, Ngu couldn’t contain her happiness over her first gold medal in Sukma.

“I feel proud of myself because I won my first gold medal for Sukma. This is my fourth time participating (in Sukma) and it will be my last already.

“I hope I will do my best for this Sukma and will get good results for Sarawak,” she said.

Ngu will compete in the women’s jianshu event tomorrow (Aug 15) and women’s qiangshu event the following day (Aug 16).

“I hope I will get one more gold medal. I will try my best,” she added.

As at the time of writing, Ngu’s victory brings Sarawak’s medal tally to three—one gold, one silver and one bronze.

The other two medals were also contributed by fellow wushu athletes—Carmen Chaw Jia Min who won silver in the women’s taijijian event, and Fung Tai Leong who won bronze in the men’s nanquan event. — DayakDaily
