KUCHING, May 13: The 15-year-old boy involved in the horrific accident that claimed five lives at Jalan Stutong Baru on Jan 14, along with his father, will be charged at the Magistrates’ Court here tomorrow (May 14).
According to a statement, Kuching district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said this followed the completion of an investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, with the investigation paper being referred to the Attorney General’s (AG) Chambers in Putrajaya.
“The AG Chambers decided that the teenager will be charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving, while the second charge is under Section 39(1) of the same Act which prohibits anyone under the age of 16 from driving a vehicle on the road.
“The teenagerās father, aged 35, will be charged under Section 33(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which addresses the offence of leaving a child without reasonable supervision.”
Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident occurred when the teenager, who did not possess a valid license, was driving from Jalan Airport towards Stutong Baru, lost control of the vehicle and veered into the opposite lane.
The car collided with two cars and two motorcycles travelling in the opposite direction.
As a result, four victimsāthree males and one female, all locals aged between 16 and 45ādied at the scene. Another 16-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).
In addition, the teenager, who sustained a broken neck before being detained, and three other victims were injured. ā DayakDaily
