KUCHING, April 27: A student was killed while another was seriously injured in an accident at the Batu 11 traffic lights on Jalan Kuching-Serian on Tuesday night (April 25).

Padawan District police chief Supt Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the accident happened around 11.40pm.

He said the accident involved a Perodua Axia car that the two victims were riding in and a Ford Ranger.

ā€œWhile the victimā€™s car was making a U-turn when the traffic light was still red, suddenly a Ford Ranger pickup driven by a man who was moving straight from the direction of Serian towards Kuching hit the victimā€™s car.

ā€œAs a result of the collision, the victimā€™s car crashed onto the left shoulder of the road,ā€ he said in a statement yesterday.

He added that the two victims were then rushed to the Sarawak General Hospital.

However, he said, the passenger of the Axia car was confirmed dead by a Sarawak General Hospital medical officer at 2.51am yesterday.

The deceased is a male student, 19, from Kampung Bengoh, Jalan Puncak Borneo.

ā€œThe victim who died was a passenger in the Perodua Axia car and the driver of the car was also a 19-year-old male student who was seriously injured.

ā€œMeanwhile, the driver of the Ford Ranger did not suffer any injuries,ā€ he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. ā€” DayakDaily
