KUCHING, Aug 15: Telekom Malaysia (TM) will provide the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) with direct communication channels, including a dedicated contact person, to facilitate reporting and coordination to allow the council to alert TM on missing or damaged manhole covers.

According to a statement, this followed a courtesy call by Network Sarawak general manager, Jafer Sadig Abdul Lathiff, and TM general manager, Abdul Rahman Taha, to MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.

During the meeting, Jafer also informed Wee that TM is carrying out ongoing surveillance and inspection exercises across the city to promptly identify any missing or damaged manhole covers and take immediate action to replace them.

TM also gave its commitment that all reported missing manhole covers will be addressed without delay, prioritising public safety and preventing potential accidents.

Wee welcomed this strengthened working relationship, noting that the proactive measures by TM reflect a shared commitment to the safety and well-being of Kuching South residents.

He stressed that such inter-agency collaboration is essential in maintaining the city’s infrastructure and ensuring that no issue is left unattended.

“Public safety is our priority, and by working closely with TM, we can respond faster, act more effectively, and prevent unnecessary risks to our community,” said Wee.

The courtesy call concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to continuous cooperation, with regular updates and joint efforts to maintain infrastructure integrity across Kuching South.

On Aug 8, prompt intervention by MBKS and TM saw six out of eight missing manhole covers along Jalan Pending swiftly repaired and replaced.

This comes in the wake of an incident where a two-year-old boy died after falling into an uncovered sewer manhole at Jalan Dr Wong Soon Kai in Sibu on Aug 4. — DayakDaily
