KUCHING, July 24: Forming stronger ties with local operators in Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwestern China, will pave the way for remarkable results and open a new chapter in Malaysia–China tourism relations, says Federal Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Dato Seri Tiong King Sing.

“Forming stronger bonds with the local operators here, I believe we will achieve remarkable results.

“Let’s mark the beginning of future collaborations and open a new chapter in Malaysia–China tourism relations,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday (July 23).

Tiong was in Urumqi to launch the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign and the promotional event for the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme in the region.

“Yesterday evening in Urumqi, I launched our VM2026 campaign and the promotional event for the MM2H programme in this promising market.

“I highlighted that Malaysia is a multicultural nation where diverse ethnicities live in mutual respect, with a background of rich festive traditions and unique culinary offerings.

“We offer both halal Muslim cuisine and traditional Chinese flavours passed down through generations. I warmly welcome tourism players and friends from Urumqi to come and explore Malaysia for themselves,” he said.

Tiong emphasised that cooperation between Malaysian and Urumqi tourism operators can be mutually beneficial and lead to win-win outcomes.

“There is strong potential for us to jointly develop tour packages in areas such as cultural festivals, Muslim-friendly tourism, wellness and healing tourism, family-friendly travel, as well as educational and youth exchange programmes. These can further enrich the variety of travel options available in Malaysia,” he explained.

He also highlighted the positive impact of direct flight connectivity between the two destinations.

“On our side, ever since China Southern Airlines launched the Kuala Lumpur–Urumqi route, it has greatly enhanced connectivity.

“Coupled with the rich heritage of the Silk Road, more and more Malaysians are becoming interested in Xinjiang and are keen to visit as tourists,” he said. — DayakDaily
