KUCHING, Nov 13: Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) and Worldview Climate Solutions (WCS) Malaysia Sdn Bhd today signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), officially launching a groundbreaking blue carbon initiative in the Tanjung Manis area.
According to a media release, the project aims to establish and develop a blue carbon ecosystem by capturing and trading carbon from restored mangroves, while also supporting local biodiversity and eco-tourism.
This partnership followed a series of feasibility studies conducted since 2023, which confirmed the suitability of Tanjung Manis as a sustainable blue carbon site.
The signing ceremony, held at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) Complex, was attended by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who witnessed the agreement alongside WCS Malaysia’s Managing Director Dato’ Selva Kumar Ail A. Subramaniam and STIDC General Manager Zainal Abidin Abdullah.
Awang Tengah, also the STIDC Management Board chairman, highlighted that the project, designed to restore and conserve 11,000 hectares of mangrove forests, marked a major step in Sarawak’s commitment to environmental sustainability and economic growth, bolstered by foreign direct investment.
Zainal Abidin underscored that this initiative reflects STIDC’s commitment to conserving Sarawak’s natural resources for future generations while promoting regional economic development.
“With the backing of the Sarawak government and our partners, we are confident this project will serve as a cornerstone for sustainable growth in the Tanjung Manis Economic Growth Area,” he stressed.
The blue carbon project will focus on environmental protection, ecosystem restoration, and the development of community programmes aimed at boosting local economies and encouraging sustainable land use practices. — DayakDaily
