SIBU, July 7: Statelessness is not a hindrance in Liana Sari Santud’s pursuit for a degree in Accountancy at University Technology Sarawak (UTS).
Liana Sari, 20, had on Wednesday voiced out her dilemma in a TikTok video, worrying that her lack of identity card might become an issue in her application for a degree studies in UTS.
She had tagged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee who is also UTS chairman.
In response, Dr Annuar said Liana Sari had completed her foundation course with UTS and was applying to do Bachelor of Accountancy for February next year intake. Â As February intake is still months away, UTS has yet to issue offer letter.
Liana Sari then changed her mind and hoped to enrol in the September intake which UTS accepted and even offered her UTS Bursary Scheme.
“They told me that I will be given the same assistance like other students even though I am stateless and I am qualified to receive the same aid. So the issue of me studying in the university is solved,” she said with much relief.
A delighted Liana said the university would also be helping her with her citizenship status.
“It is not only that as the university will also look into my identity card problem. They will arrange a meeting with Dr Annuar to discuss further on the problem that I am facing. I am very thankful to Dr Annuar and the university for their assistance and detailed explanation given to me,” she said.
She also hoped that her identity card issue could be solved as soon as possible.
“I wish to apologise for any wrongful words in the many videos that I have made and I wish to thank all who have supported me,” she said.
In her earlier video, Liana, who is from Rumah Sika, Pasai Siong, said she had undergone a selection process at UTS but the university had difficulty in accepting her as she is stateless.
Her mother had helped her apply for an identity card last year but there has not been any news on it.
Liana said both her parents and her two siblings are also stateless.
She added that she could study in primary and secondary schools in Sarawak as she has a birth certificate. — DayakDaily
