KUCHING, May 20: Sarawak will set up more Covid-19 vaccination centres (PPVs) in Kuching to cater for about 560,000 to 570,000 eligible Kuchingites.

State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the current vaccination capacity per day of the PPVs at Stadium Perpaduan, Petra Jaya and the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) is at 1,600 doses while the State government’s aim is to reach up to 2,500 doses.

“Now, our capacity is at 1,600 (doses per day). We want to push it to 2,000 or even up to 2,500 (doses).

“Our operating hours now end at 5pm, but when more vaccines come later on, we will extend the time so we are able to give opportunities to more Kuching people to get vaccinated.

“Kuching is a big city, so we have to make sure that we are able to cope, so we (will) increase the number of vaccine administering centres,” he told reporters during a work visit to Stadium Perpaduan, Petra Jaya here today.

Uggah, who is also the Deputy Chief Minister, was there to inspect the implementation of a new system at the vaccination centre where an electronic numbering system and direction signboards were installed.

Noting that the indoor stadium is now almost similar to a hospital with clear floors, he said the new system has given the vaccination centre a facelift with organised procedures.

“I’m very happy with this improvement. It is very systematic now for the public who comes in for vaccination.

“They know where to go and the floors inside are also very smooth while there are no issues of social distancing.

“So, this will be the model that we want to use for other PPVs throughout Sarawak,” he said.

Adding on, he asserted that the system currently implemented at the indoor stadium would be rolled out to other PPVs in other cities and towns. — DayakDaily
