KUCHING, July 22: Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen has submitted an emergency motion to the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat pursuant to Standing Order 18 of the Parliament to move the House to discuss the stone-throwing incidents along Jalan Batu Kawa, Kuching.

In a statement, Chong said that over the past six months, a person has been riding a motorcycle along Jalan Batu Kawa here, throwing stones at oncoming cars and breaking their windshields.

He said police have set up roadblocks, and the local council has installed a solar-powered, AI-enabled CCTV camera at the site of the incidents. However, the perpetrator remains at large, and the stone-throwing persists.

Chong, who is also Padungan assemblyman and chairman of the Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP), claimed that law enforcement is powerless and that the issue going viral had revealed the government’s inability to resolve it.

“More importantly, road-users are now in constant anxiety when travelling up and down that stretch of the road, fearing that at any moment a stone will smash through their windscreen when they are driving on the road.

“This is a specific matter that affects public interest and ought to be dealt with urgently before lives are lost due to such a criminal and irresponsible act,” he said.

Chong then said that the Speaker will decide on Thursday whether it will be debated or rejected.

“With the matter now brought to the attention of the Parliament and the federal government, I hope that the matter can be resolved, and the true culprit identified and arrested as soon as possible,” he said.

On July 7, a 68-year-old man suspected of hurling stones at passing vehicles along Jalan Batu Kawa was arrested.

Following that, on July 11, the Magistrates’ Court ordered the man to undergo a month-long psychiatric evaluation as he has a documented mental condition.

The court directed that the accused be sent to Sentosa Hospital for assessment and scheduled the case to be mentioned again on August 11.

However, there has been a resurgence of stone-hurling incidents targeting moving vehicles despite the suspect’s arrest, which prompted the installation of the solar-powered AI CCTV at Jalan Batu Kawa. — DayakDaily
