KUCHING, Nov 5: Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen presented RM75,000 from his Tertiary Education Assistance Fund to 50 tertiary students today as part of a programme undertaken by his Stampin service centre.
In a statement, Chong said he has allocated a large portion of his parliamentary allocation for the education aid programme.
The programme presents qualified applicants with an annual bursary grant of RM1,500.
The conditions to qualify as an applicant are as follows:
- The student is currently enrolled in a university for a Bachelor’s degree or any Diploma course offered by a college;
- The student’s residential address is within the Stampin constituency (a condition imposed by the Government on the disbursement of the Constituency Allocation); and
- The combined income of the parents of the applicant is less than RM7,000.
Chong, who is also Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chief, revealed that since the programme began, he has managed to give out education aid to more than 400 students.
He explained that the purpose of the assistance fund is to alleviate the financial burden of low-income families to help support students in their pursuit of tertiary education.
“It is always a pleasure to witness and feel the joy of the students and their parents when they receive the assistance funds as they appreciate and need such assistance funds to get them through their tertiary education.
“So long as I have the constituency allocation, I will continue the programme to help these students,” said Chong. — DayakDaily
