MIRI, May 18: Stage bus operations for Miri division resumed today (Monday) but with limited passengers onboard in compliance to strict standard operating procedures (SOPs) being imposed to ensure social distancing.

The three stage bus operators, namely Miri Transport Company; Miri Belait Transport Sdn Bhd and Miri City Bus Sdn Bhd, are charging a flat fare of RM1.00 per passenger per trip within Miri City, said Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin

In a statement recently, he had proposed the implementation of RM1.00 flat rate bus fare in Sarawak, to address the challenges faced by the bus companies and to assist the users especially from the low income group.

The implementation of the RM1.00 flat rate bus fare was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, however, the State Disaster Management Committee has recently granted approval for bus companies to resume operation in green and yellow zones.

With this approval, the bus companies can start operation in Miri, Sibu, Sarikei and now Kuching which has already been categorised as yellow zone.

Lee described the initiative as a manifestation of the State government to help the bus companies to improve their services and commitment to take care of the low income group who depend on bus transport for their mobility. – DayakDaily
