KUCHING, Sept 26: Christians in Kampung Kandis Baru will now be able to carry out worship services comfortably following the completion and the opening of the new St Thomas More Church.
Roman Catholic Archbishop, the Most Revd Simon Poh, blessed the church, while Food Industries, Commodities and Regional Development Minister Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom witnessed it.
Also present were Sarawak Deputy Minister of Transport cum Tasik Biru assemblyman Dato Henry Harry Jinep, Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh, Tebedu assemblyman Dr Simon Sinang Bada, Unit For Other Religions (Unifor) director Richard Lon, and the Rector of St Stephen Rev Fr Peter Liston.
The construction of the new church started in 2017 and took three years to complete at the cost of RM1.6 million.
The building cost includes construction, equipment, and facilities needed in the church.
According to Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Miro said in his speech that he was grateful to the Sarawak government for assisting in funding the church’s construction.
He added that there are also several other churches which are still under construction and will be inaugurated.
“I am very pleased to help in the development of houses of worship like this church because I believe in the slogan ‘unity in diversity’,” he said.
Dr Stephen also congratulated the residents of Kampung Kandis Baru as well as residents in the Serembu area who are having their houses of worship under construction. — DayakDaily
