KUCHING, March 9: A man undergoing treatment for mental health issues at Kota Sentosa Hospital is believed to have skipped his prescribed medication before causing a commotion at St. Joseph’s Cathedral yesterday evening.
According to Kuching District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, authorities received reports from the public at around 6.50pm regarding an unidentified man who entered the church in a vehicle while playing loud music and holding a bottle of alcohol.
“The man suddenly started shouting profanities before throwing the bottle and leaving the church in an angry state,” he said in a statement today.
A police team from the Central Police Station was immediately dispatched to the scene and managed to detain the suspect.
Later, the man’s family came forward with documents confirming that he is receiving psychiatric treatment at Kota Sentosa Hospital but is suspected of not taking his prescribed medication, which may have led to his erratic behavior.
The case is being investigated under Section 295 of the Penal Code for defiling a place of worship with intent to insult a religion.
If convicted, the suspect could face up to two years in prison, a fine, or both.
The police urge anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the Kuching IPD Control Center at 082-244444 or the case investigating officer, Insp. Ang Mei Cin, at 010-7039818.
