KUCHING, Sept 4: The Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR) Phase 2 in Limbang will be officially launched on Sept 11, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg expected to attend the ceremony.

Federal Minister of Works Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi confirmed the date during a press conference after officiating the opening ceremony of the Sarawak Facility Management Industry Seminar Engagement Day 2025 at a local hotel here today.

“The date has been proposed for Sept 11, and we have already received confirmation of attendance from the Prime Minister and Premier.

“This project marks a milestone as it has been a year since the Letter of Acceptance (LOA) was issued to the appointed contractor for the construction of SSLR Phase 2. The groundbreaking ceremony will be held in Limbang,” he said.

Nanta emphasised that the SSLR project is a vital infrastructure link to improve connectivity between Sarawak and Sabah, benefitting communities and enhancing regional development.

For the record, Phase 2 of the SSLR spans approximately 322 kilometres, connecting Lawas, Limbang, and Miri to Sabah without passing through Brunei.

The project carries an estimated cost of RM7.4 billion, and is expected to take about five years to complete due to challenging geography and terrain.

Based on project details, the Limbang section under Phase 2 is regarded as a critical stretch in connecting the two Borneo states.

As of April 2025, early works such as site clearing, earthworks, and drainage have commenced, though overall physical progress remains modest at around 0.93 per cent, with completion targeted for the third quarter of 2029.

Nanta added that the Ministry of Works (KKR), together with relevant agencies, will continue to monitor progress closely to ensure the project is delivered on time and meets quality standards.

“The government remains committed to ensuring that this project not only connects Sarawak and Sabah better, but also brings socio-economic benefits to the local people,” Nanta stressed.

The SSLR Phase 2 is also expected to improve accessibility to rural areas in northern Sarawak, particularly Ulu Limbang, and open opportunities for eco-tourism growth. — DayakDaily
