KUCHING, Feb 22: The iconic Pesta Benak (Tidal Bore Festival), which is one of Sri Aman’s biggest attractions and is unique to the area, deserves to be included in Malaysia tourism calendar.

Raising this request in Parliament, Sri Aman MP Dato Sri Doris Sophia Brodie said the inclusion of Pesta Benak in the national tourism calendar will encourage more visitors and tourists to visit and experience Sri Aman.

Apart from that, she also requested the Federal Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) to help develop and promote the agro-food and agro-tourism sectors in Sri Aman.

“Sri Aman is recognised as one of the food baskets or agriculture hubs in Sarawak because the land in the area is considered fertile and suitable for planting of crops like paddy, maize, rambutan, dabai and so on.

“This will attract more private investors to cultivate land in Sri Aman and will increase food production and contribute to the food security of Sarawak and Malaysia,” she said when debating the Royal Address in Parliament, Kuala Lumpur on Monday (Feb 20).

According to the news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Doris emphasised that the Ministry of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Sarawak is fully supportive of modern agriculture development in Sri Aman.

In addition, she also urged the Ministry of Higher Education to establish higher education institutions or agriculture-based industrial training in Sri Aman. — DayakDaily
