KUCHING, March 22: Once the Sarawak government has taken over the Bintulu Port, it plans to build a specialised terminal near the facility to cater for new industries.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said in line with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 policy, the State is currently developing new industries including hydrogen.
“This hydrogen (industry) needs a specialised terminal and this will definitely be one of the development projects that we must implement in Bintulu,” he said during a press conference in Putrajaya today after the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony to launch the change of Bintulu Port’s status from a Federal port to a State port.
He was answering a question from a reporter who inquired whether the State government has any expansion plans for Bintulu Port once the change of hands has been finalised.
Abang Johari further said Bintulu Port’s cargo operation will also be increased in the future.
“Bintulu is a strategic port where if we study the traffic flow between the West and the East, it will definitely give an impact not only to Sarawak but Malaysia in general.
“I also believe that the future development depends on green energy so we will focus on developing green energy which will allow investors to come for green products. This is in line with the developments happening around the world,” he added.
At the same time, Abang Johari said upon the return of Bintulu Port, the Sarawak government will establish a central port authority to manage all the ports in the State including Kuching Port Authority, Miri Port, Tanjung Manis Port, Sibu Port and Bintulu Port.
Among those present during the press conference were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas; Federal Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook; Federal Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi; Federal Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Dato Sri Nancy Shukri; National Unity Minister Dato Sri Aaron Ago Dagang; Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah and Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Sarawak (Infrastructure Development) Datuk Aidel Lariwoo. – DayakDaily
