KUCHING, Nov 5: Who will be the next opposition leader in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) will be announced by Nov 8 (Sunday) revealed DUN Speaker Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar.

Besides the appointment of the new opposition leader, other details such as the number of bills, motions and questions will also be known by then.

“(As to who is the new opposition leader)….I will answer on the 8th (of November). There are changes, on the 8th (of November) I will go into detail.

“Regarding the questions and the motions. These, I shall deliberate and elaborate on the 8th (Nov) after the pre-Council meeting, as usual. I will go into detail about how many questions directed at which ministry and how many motions from which honourable members and so forth. This, I shall dwell on the Nov 8, Sunday,” Asfia told a news conference at DUN complex here today.

He added there would be bills tabled in the coming DUN sitting which is scheduled from Nov 9-13, which falls on Monday-Friday next week.

“I just want to inform (you all) so that the honourable members will also be informed by today that there is a change in the timing of the DUN sitting,” said Asfia.

The current opposition leader is Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen. But his party and Pakatan Harapan (PH) have lost their majority seats among the opposition after Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon’s membership has been disqualified, and Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei quit the party recently.

Subsequently, Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB), which was formerly known as United People’s Party (UPP), which was a friendly-party to the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) then, has turned into a full-fledged opposition party since last year.

Having four elected DUN members, PSB now has six with the admission of former Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak chief and Ba Kelalan assemblyman Baru Bian and PKR Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How into its fold. -DayakDaily
