KUCHING, Aug 2: South Korea’s leading steel manufacturer, Posco Holdings, is keen to explore investment opportunities within emerging energy sectors including hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS) in Sarawak.
This intention was communicated during a courtesy visit by Deputy Sarawak Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan to Posco Holdings’ executive vice president of the Hydrogen Unit Cho Ju Ik, in Seoul yesterday (Aug 1).
According to a press statement, the primary purpose of this courtesy visit was to reaffirm and strengthen the collaborative relationship between Sarawak and Posco Holdings, a company that has already engaged in numerous projects within Malaysia.
Awang Tengah, who is also Minister for International Trade, Industry and Invesment (Mintred), welcomes Posco Holding’s interest and hoped that the company will take a deeper dive into exploring investment prospects within Sarawak’s new energy sectors.
Posco Holdings, headquartered in Pohang, South Korea, is recognised for its prominent role in steel production.
In 2015, it achieved an impressive output of 42,000,000 metric tonnes (41,000,000 long tonnes; 46,000,000 short tonnes) of crude steel, earning it the prestigious position of the world’s sixth-largest steel manufacturer.
Notably, in 2010, the company held the distinction of being the world’s most valuable steel manufacturing entity in terms of market value, and in 2012, it secured the 146th rank on the Fortune Global 500 list of the world’s largest corporations.
Currently, Posco operates two state-of-the-art integrated steel mills in South Korea, located in Pohang and Gwangyang.
Ambassador of Malaysia to the Republic of Korea Datuk Lim Juay Jin, Deputy Mintred Minister Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh, advisor to Mintred Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais, permanent secretary to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development Datu Zaidi Mahdi, Land and Survey Department director Datu Abdullah Julaihi, Regional Corridor Development Authority (Recoda) chief executive officer Datu Ismawi Ismuni, Sarawak Energy chief operating officer James Ung, and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) vice president for upstream Jeremy Wong were among those present. — DayakDaily
