KUCHING, Feb 19: South Korean energy and chemical company OCI TerraSus, in partnership with Japan’s Tokuyama, is investing in Sarawak’s first polysilicon semiconductor manufacturing plant—the first of its kind in Asean.
The new facility will be built in Samalaju Industrial Park, adjacent to OCI TerraSus’ existing plant, to enhance operational efficiency.
In a TVS news report, chairman Lee WooHyun described the project as a complex undertaking that requires strong policy support from the Sarawak government.
“This marks the first collaboration between a Korean and Japanese company in Malaysia, specifically in Sarawak, to establish the first polysilicon plant in the entire Asean region.
“Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has provided unwavering support since our arrival in Sarawak eight years ago.
“He has also assured us of his full commitment to ensuring the success of this semiconductor investment,” Lee said after paying a courtesy visit to the Premier at Wisma Bapa Malaysia today.
To drive the project’s success, OCI TerraSus plans to collaborate with local companies, academic institutions, and technical training centers to develop a skilled workforce.
“We require highly skilled engineers and scientists, not just low-cost labour. That is why talent development and training are our top priorities,” he emphasised.
Lee further revealed that OCI TerraSus aims to recruit around 600 engineers and technicians over the next three years.
Accompanying the OCI TerraSus delegation during the courtesy visit were chief executive officer Dato’ Dr Anas Alam Faizli and Human Resources Management director Ting Siew Ling. — DayakDaily
