KUCHING, Feb 14: A RM5 million international-standard running track at the Song Open Stadium has earned recognition from World Athletics—the international governing body for the sport of athletics—boosting sports development in rural Sarawak.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the track is certified as an Athletics Class 1 facility, placing it on par with tracks at renowned stadiums worldwide.

He said the upgrade, completed about a year ago, included the running track, grandstand and other key infrastructure.

“This is part of our continuous effort to enhance public facilities, not only in urban centres but also in rural areas,” he told reporters after the launching ceremony for the completion of the repair and upgrading works of the Song Open Stadium today.

Abdul Karim said quality sports infrastructure is essential to provide comfort, accessibility and opportunities, especially for children and youths in outlying areas.

“With proper facilities, we hope to discover and nurture local talent who can go on to represent their divisions, the state and even the country in the future,” he said.

He added that bringing international-standard facilities to rural areas would allow schools in Song and surrounding areas to use the stadium for training and sports events.

“This track can be fully utilised for school sports days and regular training,” he said.

Abdul Karim added that the upgraded stadium is not only for competitive sports but also for the well-being of the local community.

“Youths, children and residents here can use these facilities for a healthier and more active lifestyle,” he added.

He said the Song Open Stadium upgrade reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive sports development and balanced infrastructure growth across Sarawak. — DayakDaily
