KUCHING, Oct 23: Some Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) incumbents are stepping down ahead of the 13th Sarawak Election (PRN13), with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg hinting at a mix of experienced and younger candidates.

Clarifying that they would not be dropped, Abang Johari said some current assemblymen had chosen to step down.

“Not dropped, some are stepping down,” he told reporters after announcing the dissolution of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) at a special press conference here today.

Asked whether GPS would field many new faces, Abang Johari confirmed that there would be some, but declined to disclose the number.

“There are, of course, new faces,” he said.

He added that the coalition’s line-up would combine experienced politicians with younger candidates.

“What I can tell you here is that it will be a combination of the experienced and the young,” he said.

Abang Johari said the final candidate line-up would be decided at a GPS meeting, after which the coalition would hold a press conference to announce its candidates and election theme.

“GPS will have a meeting first. We will meet first, then we will have a press conference after the meeting,” he said.

He declined to reveal the proportion of new candidates, saying the figure had yet to be determined.

Earlier, Abang Johari announced that the Sarawak Legislative Assembly would be dissolved on Oct 26, paving the way for the 13th Sarawak Election. — DayakDaily
