SERIAN, Sept 28: The role of Unifor should be praised because it manifests goodwill and strengthens prolonged unity amongst Sarawakians regardless of race, according to Balai Ringin assemblyman Datuk Snowdan Lawan.

“This shows that our GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) government is serious about unity, knowing that we live in a plural society where people of different beliefs converge, yet live harmoniously. So, we must safeguard this unity,” he said during a cheque presentation ceremony at Kampung Ensebang Kuari Baru community hall yesterday, according to a press release.

On the political front, Snowdan who is also the Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports criticised a political opponent who has been going around in the constituency to canvass for support for the coming state election.

“This is a group of unprincipled people who kept changing their stance during the federal upheaval that led to the collapse of the PH (Pakatan Harapan) government in February.

“Balai Ringin should rid itself of having this type of leader and not vote him. They have betrayed the party,” he said without naming the individual concerned.

On development, Snowdan who is a three-term assemblyman disclosed there were now a number of infrastructure projects in the pipeline, including road access, such as at Ubah Pantu, electricity and treated water plants and boosters and community halls.

“The opposition just likes to criticise and discredit the government because they have no other avenues to gain political mileage,” he opined.

The cheques from the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) were for three churches and totaled RM160,000.

At the function, Snowdan also handed over Minor Rural Project (MRP) cheques totaling RM99,000 to various Village Development and Security Committees (JKKKs), Women’s Bureau and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). He also presented Kenyalang Gold Cards to successful applicants.

He also approved MRP funds amounting to RM17,000 for the JKKK and Women’s Bureau of Kampung Ensebang Kuari Baru.

Also speaking at the event were Assistant Minister of Transport Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, political secretary to the Chief Minister Datuk Seri Doris Sophia Brodie and Datuk Temenggong Samuel Lawen from Sri Aman.

Meanwhile, Snowdan reminded the people to be on guard against certain groups of people who create animosity and spread lies about an alleged new tuai rumah (TR) quota.

“Today I handed over one to your TR and it is genuine. For that reason I am glad to note that the people in this area, especially Kampung Ensebang Kuari Baru, led by TR Stewart Collin has turned a new leaf by inviting us here and giving support to GPS and abandoned the opposition,” Snowdan said, after presenting a certificate of appointment to Stewart in front of some 600 people. — DayakDaily
