KUCHING, Oct 22: The beauty, diversity, and soul of Sarawak come alive in breathtaking detail through Snapshots of Sarawak, a world-class coffee table photobook that pays visual tribute to the State’s rich culture, nature, and people.

According to Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) news, the photobook was produced by the Photographic Society of Sibu with the support of the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP).

It features nearly 300 captivating images by more than 70 photographers with most of them Sarawakians, whose works were selected from MTCP’s photography competitions held between 2022 and 2024, including Sibu Heritage Photo Contest, Enchanting Sarawak: Capturing the Heart of Borneo, Sarawak River Rides, and Colours of Sarawak.

Photographic Society of Sibu president Peter Lee Kueh Leng said the photobook goes beyond showcasing picturesque landscapes, serving instead as a living documentation of Sarawak’s distinct identity, from traditional longhouse ceremonies and lush rainforests to vibrant festivals that embody the State’s multicultural harmony.

“Each photo tells its own story of our culture, nature, food, adventure, and heritage. It is not merely a work of visual art, but also a powerful tourism promotional tool that positions Sarawak as a world-class destination,” he said during the launch ceremony held at Baitulmakmur II today.

Lee added that Snapshots of Sarawak aims to inspire young Sarawakians to appreciate their heritage while encouraging both local and international visitors to explore the State’s hidden treasures.

“We believe photography has the power to spark curiosity, broaden understanding, and instil pride in our Sarawakian identity. This book is not just a collection of images, it is a reflection of who we are,” he said.

Deputy Minister for Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan described the photobook as a valuable tourism asset that deserves to be displayed in hotels, government offices, and tourism outlets across Sarawak.

“Imagine guests from around the world staying in Kuching, Sibu, Miri, or Bintulu flipping through this book. They’re not just looking at photos, they’re discovering the real story of Sarawak. This is how we share our story with the world,” he said. — DayakDaily
