KUCHING, Sept 9: Security at all Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities has been stepped up after one of its employees in Bintulu received threats from an unknown individual.
According to a Bernama report, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the officer was threatened via SMS before lodging a police report.
“The police are working with PETRONAS to reinforce security at all LNG facilities. State contingent teams nationwide are also on alert to ensure the safety of PETRONAS facilities remains fully under control,” he said during a blood donation drive held in conjunction with the 218th Police Day in Kuala Lumpur today.
Yesterday, the media reported that the federal government had instructed LNG facilities in Bintulu to immediately tighten security following the incident.
The National Security Council (NSC), in a statement, said the precautionary measure was necessary to facilitate swift investigations.
PETRONAS, in its own statement, confirmed that operations at the Bintulu LNG facilities, including supply, remain unaffected.
The national oil company stressed that the safety of its employees, contractors and surrounding communities is its highest priority, adding that it treats any potential security risk at its facilities with the utmost seriousness. — DayakDaily
