SEMATAN, June 5: SMK Green Road student Laura Lim Lee Shuen won the YB Karim Hamzah Shield at the 11th Youth Communication Camp (YCC) at Putra Sentosa Retreat Camp here today.
Lim received the shield from Minister of Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak (MYSED) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah after winning first place in the ‘Prepared Speech’ category in the ‘Lend Me Your Ears’ Speech Competition at the YCC.
In second and third places were Faith Bong Rui Yi (SMK Sungai Maong) and Muhammad Syazwan Akmal Mohd Safrie Simon (SMK Sri Matang), respectively.
Meanwhile, Jap Kai Huai from Lodge International School won the ‘Impromptu Speech’ category, beating Ethan Chai Chang Jing (SMK Green Road) in second and Angelyne Tuta Louis (SMK Batu Lintang) in third.
Speaking during the closing ceremony, Abdul Karim who is the YCC patron said that he was happy to see that the event had a good balance of students across different races and schools.
“This kind of event is seldom implemented in schools where we would usually see the Malays only hang out with the Malays while the Chinese are grouped with their own.
“Thus, this event serves as an avenue for the students of different backgrounds to meet and socialise with one another, where I can see that they can assimilate well,” he said.
Amongst those present were Tanjong Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan; Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang; the Club’s president Chester Bong; Mitsubishi Corporation chief executive in Malaysia, Masashi Shiraishi; Sarawak Energy Berhad senior vice president of corporate services Siti Aisah Adenan; camp organising chairman Sahil Singh Dev and principal facilitator Mike Lim. — DayakDaily
