KUCHING, Feb 13: SMK Bario is set to commence Form 4 classes this academic year, following the federal Ministry of Education’s approval to upgrade the school to include upper secondary levels.
Mulu assemblyman, Datuk Gerawat Gala, confirmed the development after discussions with the school’s principal, teachers, and the Marudi district education officer.
“This year, they (SMK Bario) will start Form 4 classes,” said Gerawat, noting that the current infrastructure is adequate for the initial intake. However, he emphasised the need for further expansions.
“They will have to start building new classrooms and a new boarding house next year when the current Form 4 students advance to Form 5, and new students enrolling to Form 4,” he said when met with reporters at his office at Baitulmakmur I earlier today.
Reflecting on his own experience as an alumnus of SMK Bario, Gerawat highlighted the challenges faced by rural students who had to relocate to urban areas after completing their Form 3.
He believes that allowing students to complete their secondary education in a familiar environment will better prepare them for future challenges.
“We are very happy that the federal government has agreed to upgrade the school to Form 4 and Form 5,” he added, praising the school’s conducive environment and strong community support.
Gerawat, who is also the Deputy Minister in Sarawak’s Premier Department (Labour, Immigration, and Project Monitoring) mentioned the ongoing efforts to raise funds for the necessary infrastructure.
While the current facilities can accommodate the initial Form 4 intake, additional resources will be required as the student population grows.
“For this year, when the Form 4 starts, they don’t really need new buildings yet, because the current classrooms and the boarding house are sufficient to cater,” he said.
